Reading My Own Work

This might be something I've blogged about before but heck, I'm going to do it again. That's just the kind of person I am. Besides, after 900 posts, things tend to get repeated or just become very similar. I could always keep up with current events and blog about that but if I've read something myself, I tend to not see the point in repeating it to others. Again, it's just the way I am.
Although apparently this handsome bastard punched Justin Bieber, that's something worth repeating.
When it comes to writing there are two things that I'm not very good at. The first is taking negative criticism. It's something I should really work on. Though to be honest I've not received any in a while. Perhaps I am in a better place to take it, and simply don't know. Who knows? The other is that I'm not particularly good at reading my own work. At all. This is one reason that I'm a bad editor. I have trouble going back through things I've written. I'm not even entirely sure why it is. I think part of it is that I don't want to think I'm not as good as I used to be, but that can't be all of it or I wouldn't have trouble editing. Editing and revising your own work is one way to make yourself better.
I wonder if J.K has ever gone through Harry Potter as a reader
I really do want to change that though because I've written some fabulous stories. I want to go back to them and read them. It's been so long even I've forgotten some of the smaller details and I'll probably be able to go through them as a reader. It would definitely make me feel like I've degraded though. Which is probably a fair assessment. I haven't written enough to do as well as I used to. It was why I wrote all those short stories way back when. Those were mostly writing practice. Reading my own work will also help me get a feel for how I write and could help. I won't know unless I try. Seriously, God only knows where most of my worries, fears, and doubts come from. The majority of them have to be completely unfounded.

Have you ever gone back and read your own work? Whether it be stories or even just blog posts.

    1. I just have a disturbingly fragile ego so I'm not the best at getting criticism. When someone told me how to improve Tulips it depressed me so much I couldn't actually do the edits for nearly a year. It was only when I did them I realised how much better the stories were, and how foolish I was to not do the changes sooner.

  2. I have read my own work. With "Shag Carpet Toilet," I read and reread the thing so many times that I could almost recite it in my sleep (although that would no doubt creep Mrs. Penwasser out). The only problem is that, as a supposed work of "humor," I no longer laugh at it. Which makes me ask...am I so immune to the jokes that I don't find them funny anymore? Or did it just suck in the first place?

    1. I think as a comedian you really have to repeat something so much that it stops being that funny to you. If it made you laugh at first, then it's still funny. It's not very good for a comedian to laugh at their own jokes. So don't worry about that one.

  3. I have to read my own work. Not everyone enjoys reading through a paper to check to make sure everything's consistent and properly formatted. I don't blame them though, the material is so dry.

  4. I try to but I'm not that great at reading my old work. I tend to skim read it since I already know it, but that means I tend leave mistakes in there on occasion. I'm pretty bad at editing my own stuff.

However, I've been told that I'm a pretty good proof reader for other people. This is probably because the text I'm reading is new to me, so I tend to pay attention more.
