The Story Of How I Got A Story

I was reminded recently of something that happened to me about ten years ago. It was an emotionally traumatic story so I'm not actually sure that's when it was. It was between 8 and 10 years ago maybe. I'm not sure. It was back when I was a precocious and naive young thing though. There was a time when that was the case. It's hard to believe but it's true.
Oh to be bright eyed and bushy tailed again.
I was staying with my sister and she had to go out, and she asked me to look after her kid. There was just the one. If I remembered exactly which one it was that would help me work out when it happened. I was stupid and said that I would take care of the kid. They were about one year old and couldn't talk yet. I remember that much at least. She left me with some baby food and some nappies (diapers for you yanks) and went along on her way saying she wouldn't be long.
This is how time passed.
She was gone a lot longer than expected and got quite the sight when she came back. Both me and the kid were crying messes. The child had been crying for most of the time she was gone. I tried to feed her but she wasn't taking her bottle. I'm now pretty sure it was her second girl. Being not very old she couldn't tell me what she wanted and I was having some serious trouble calming her down. My mental state was fragile even back then so I panicked and started losing it myself. It was a fun time. Fun fun time.
Fuuuuun tiiiiiimeeees
When she got back she gave me a hug, took care of the demon baby, and then handed me a gift. I can't remember if the gift was to make up for me going insane or if it was because I did something nice for her. It might have been just because. It was a Harry Potter book. I got into Harry Potter pretty late so I think even though it had been released a few years before, it was Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban. Oddly enough that's my favourite Harry Potter book despite the circumstances in which I acquired it.

Needless to say, I've never looked after a kid on my own since.

Has babysitting ever gone bad for you? Or good even, restoring my hope in children.
