You Won't Believe What My Earliest Memory Is

Forgive me the clickbait title. I couldn't resist. I wonder if it'll work. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Well anyway I was poking around one of the online hubs I'm a part of when I stumbled upon a question. The question was not in fact "What is your earliest memory?". Instead it was "What is your earliest gaming memory?" As in video games. I know my first memory of playing video games pretty well. It's one of my most vivid memories from when I was a wee lad.
It involves my old friend the Nintendo Entertainment System
In my house I have an attic. I think Americans usually refer to them as lofts. In the really old days of living here it was a bedroom. Now it's a storage area but I still remember the days it was a bedroom. In that room I had a small TV set up with a NES attached. I'd spend a lot of time playing Super Mario Bros. 3 (a game released before I was born), Duck Hunt, and one of the really old Megaman games. I'm not actually sure which one.
I love this game.
Because this happened back when I was about three years old it means that not only is that my earliest gaming memory, it's my earliest memory entirely. My earliest memory is literally playing video games. Even though I mostly remember playing video games in my teen years they have been a part of my life for over twenty years.

Friends may come and go, but video games will love you forever I guess.

What's your earliest memory?

  1. This is a great question and your earliest memory is fun and interesting! I think I was about 2 when I got stung by a bee! I never forgot the pain.

    1. I remember being stung by a bee when I was about six. I've had a troubled past when it comes to animals actually.

  2. I always wanted to have an attic bedroom when I was a kid so I could put posters on those cool sloped walls. We lived in a bungalow.

    1. It's a shame you couldn't have an attic bedroom but bungalows have their charm too. Plus, hey, no stairs! Who wouldn't want that?

  3. We call them attics, too. At least in this part of the states.

I had that Nintendo as well. I sucked at Mario 3. 2 was my fav. And I had that combo for Mario 1 where you also got Duck Hunt and that track game that came with the floor mat. I loved those games.

    1. I had that combo too and it was so fun. I don't think I had anything with a floor mat though. I was great at Mario 3. I somehow suck at it now.

  4. The Mario Brothers must be middle aged by now... I think Bart Simpson should be at least 40... but the Mario Brothers are older. My early memories are not pleasant. I had a very tumultuous childhood.

    1. Sorry to hear that about your childhood Jimmy. Mine wasn't bad by any stretch. I think the worst memory I have that isn't about bullying is the day my parents gathered us all in the kitchen and announced they were getting a divorce.

  5. You are most definitely a child of your generation to have this be your first memory. My daughters first gaming memories are of Pokemon. Her first memories though are of me and all the hours we spent together.

    1. My first memory involving my parents comes from pre-school so honestly it may actually predate this one. But even then I'm not sure. No it wouldn't because by that time I was living with my mum and stepdad as the memory involves him. I don't have any very early memories of time with my dad but I've been told by him I used to correct his language and insist he speak proper English whenever he tried to baby talk me.

Even as a kid I was a grammar Nazi.

  6. My first video gaming memory was "Pong" at the department store. For only a quarter, you could smack around a little white dot on a black background.
I also remember telephones with cords.
    And MTV playing music.
    Yeah, no shit.

    1. You remember MTV playing music? I don't think even MTV remembers that.
